Unity Statement

The essay “Trump’s Anti-Immigrant Campaign: Will We Repeat A Historic Mistake?” is written by historian and author Judy Yung. Our coalition, No More Exclusion!, has embraced it as a Unity Statement because it connects past injustices with the present and articulates the values that we wish to uphold.

We also thank Ruthanne Lum McCunn, who helped Judy Yung with the essay and the list of educational resources.

City Resolution

Getting your local city or county government to acknowledge the historical significance of the Chinese Exclusion Act is another way we can educate the public about the importance of inclusion, diversity, and civil rights. Feel free to work with your local elected officials to revise the language proposed in the resolution below.

The resolution can be adapted to declare May to be a month of inclusion or the year 2017 to be a year of inclusion. We are using May 6 as the reference point because it was on May 6, 1882, that the Chinese Exclusion Act was signed into law, formalizing racial hostilities that harmed thousands of people. Today, we fight to fulfill our nation’s ideals of justice and equality for all.
